In the month of October, the Mental Notion Society was pleased to cast 10 players to their current production of their rendition to Luigi Pirandello’s “Six Characters in Search of an Author.” If you’re not familiar, the following is a short synopsis:
The Mental Notion Society presents “Six Characters in Search of an Author.” As the Director takes routine to her usual rehearsal process, she is interrupted by six characters in need to finish their own play on life. This metatheatre experience awakens the debate of characters acting to live or living to act. Six literal Characters appear on a stage in need to finish out “a play” that an author had started but not finished. Do they succeed with the help of a Director and her crew?
And now we introduce your cast / crew:
• THE FATHER = Jerome Hicks
• THE MOTHER = Julia Chereson
• THE STEP-DAUGHTER = Bryna Berezowska
• THE SON = George Infantado
• MADAME PACE = Ariana Cohen
• THE MANAGER = Kelly Tietjen
• LEADING MAN = Peter Corey
• LEADING LADY = Jenna Bowers
• PROMPTER = Kevin Dolan
• STAGEHAND = Katie Faris
Assistant to the Director = Dustin Sharp
Tech & Lights = Drew Cohen
Director = Jonald Jude Reyes
As we’re entering into November, the rehearsal process shall have to acknowledge the upcoming holiday breaks. Typically, a week off during any production can hang up actors from keeping focus. But we not only have Thanksgiving, we also have “Christmas” (or relatable gift giving holiday) and New Year’s. Therefore, the process will begin heavy in blocking to set a strong foundation into a light schedule over the holidays and back to heavy work right before opening. A bit of a challenge but this is where Actors & a Director are tested.
The process to this moment has been very beneficial and beautiful in terms of debate to the content. Since the play is very meta, the players have questioned specific motives and stories to their characters. Another aspect that has been brought up is how to keep the audience attentive as a major part of the play is delivered in a storytelling fashion. These are all items to be seen as the process continues.
One of the bigger picture items is how to deliver this play in a manner that hasn’t already been done. As Pirandello’s play was originally produced in the 1920′s, there is no doubt that there have been an overwhelming variation to this production. We only hope to keep true to the message Pirandello wanted while putting a Mental Notion stamp on it.
Six Characters will be performed every Friday at 8pm, from February 21st thru March 21st, 2014 (5 performances) at Stage 773 – 1225 W. Belmont Ave., Chicago, IL 60657.
Lastly, for your own enticement, here’s the Twilight Zone episode to which was inspired by Six Characters:
